Tripura Theatre was founded in the year 2006. Since then it has been producing full length and short plays every year. Some of the most important ones are Dharti Aba, Kabuliwala, Swami Vivekananda, Chakravyuha and the latest, Bapuji. In the last fourteen years the group has toured the whole state of Tripura and various states of North East and West Bengal. In 2009 it participated in Octave 10 organized by EZCC. In 2013 it took part in the Nezcc Festival and in 2014 in the Uttar Purva Natyasamaroha organized by NSD. Apart from performing regularly the group also organizes workshops and seminars. In 2019, February, Tripura Theatre organized an International Seminar at Agartala Press Club on the subject of perspective of theatre in Tripura. Faculties from New York, Japan, Kolkata and Agartala participated in this programme. Since 2006, Tripura Theatre has also been publishing one theatre journal every year. In the year 2020, it has been included in the prestigious UGC (University Grants Commission) Care List. After nearly 15 years of hard work this has been a huge honour and recognition for the team. In addition to all these the group has been tirelessly working for the development of theatre community in Tripura as well as the North East.
Sri Bibhu Bhattacharjee is the Director of Tripura Theatre since its inception. Apart from writing and directing he has also been regularly acting in various successful plays since 1980. From 2006 he started regularly directing plays and over the years have produced some successful plays for Tripura Theatre like Dharti Aba (staged in Kolkata Minerva in Octave 10 of Ezcc), Swami Vivekananda (presented in NEZCC Festival, Guwahati, 2013), NSD Festival in Dibrugarh in 2014, Tagore’s play Kabuliwala (Nezcc Festival 2016 Guwahati) to name a few. He is also the Editor of the theatre journal Tripura Theatre which is being published continously for 14 years. At present he is an eminent theatre personality of the state and regularly conducts workshops. He has been a faculty for various SNA and NSD workshops and seminars. At present he is the member of programme committee of NEZCC.
Other noted members of Tripura Theatre, whose contributions have made the group what it is today are Subhrangshu Chakraborty, Kamal Majumder, Shyamal Kanti Dey, Mihir Kanti Bhattacharjee, Gayatri Chowdhury, Debabrata Mukherjee, Silpi Bhattacharjee, Mrinal Kanti Chatterjee, Supriya Chowdhury, Sekhar C Dutta, Sabita Bhattacharjee, Manidipa Ray, Biprajit Bhattacharjee, Shubhankar Bhattacharjee, Apurba Saha, Abhijit Bhattacharjee, Shyamalima Dey, Sagarima Dey, Kankana Majumder etc.
